Cost Of A Destination Wedding

Goa being a popular tourist destination in the country has been equally sort after as a premium destination wedding location. Couples are  always excited at the thought of having a destination celebration here. Who can blame them with everything that this beautiful landscape has to offer; its natural beauty, white sandy beaches, throbbing nightlife, mouth-watering food, perfect tropical climate, and the relaxed laidback lifestyle makes it really hard for other places in the country to compete with it.

If costs concern you, keep in mind that there is so much of flexibility in terms of the hotel venues, accommodation for your guests, vendors for the event, food, beverages and entertainment that will get you great value on what you spend.  To arrive at an approximate costing we have taken a rough estimate considering 100 guests at a 5 starred resort.


Geographically the state is divided into two broad coastlines, the northern and the southern coasts. Most tourists make their way to the northern beach belts for their vacation. The south is a lot more private, and far less crowded as compared to the northern coastline. Majority of the resorts and hotels in the south have beach front properties with broad sea-facing coverage. It is perfect for those who want to have a beach ceremony or for those looking for a venue which is away from the hustle and bustle. The southern locations make excellent locations for an intimate shore-side gathering, or a classy celebration on the lush green lawns or perhaps something really simple and casual at a beach shack.


For any destination event, accommodation for guests is always a top priority. If the average number of guests are 100,  50 rooms with double occupancy would be required for a minimum of  a 3 days and 2 nights stay, with meals included. This way, the guests can arrive and freshen up, have lunch and get ready for the Mehendi or the Sangeet dinner on day one and get the festivities started. After spending most of the night dancing and enjoying the Mehendi or Sangeet, the following day is scheduled for wedding ceremony followed by the reception party the day after.

Broadly speaking,  the spending on accommodation and the venues varies on the type of seasonal room rates and inclusions offered by these properties which we classify into three tiers. Tier-I comprises of deluxe properties that include the Leela -Mobor, Lalit Golf & Spa Resort- Canacona and the Taj Exotica- Benaulim to name a few that is in the price range of Rs. 18,000 onwards per room a night on a twin sharing basis. At the tier-II we have properties such as the Marriot-Panjim, Park Hyatt- Cavelossim, Grand Hyatt-Bambolim which is in the range of Rs. 15,000 upwards. On the third tier resorts such as Ramada Caravela, Zuri White Sands, Radisson Blu which are available in the range of Rs.8000 and upwards. These classifications and rates are only to give you a broad idea of the pricing options which are available and are all beach properties that are popular for such an ocassion. Keep in mind though prices vary as per time of year and the tourist calendar.


On an average the room inventory at most of these properties is around 80-90 rooms of which 50-60 rooms can be booked in an advance period of 90-120 days prior to the event. Room rates can be inclusive of all meals as well, however a standard quote will include breakfast and local group transfers to the airport. Room tariffs vary each season; these rates are only to help establishing a bird’s-eye view of what the costing entails across various starred properties.

Starred resorts have provisions for indoor as well as outdoor venues within their properties itself so there is the options of choosing banquet halls, open lawns and even beachside restaurants. Ceremonies can be held on the beach as well or can hosted at the resort or even at nearby restaurants and venues.  Stand-alone venues range anywhere between Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 2,00,000 depending on the amenities offered and the type of location that it is. Beside this there would also be the cost of transportation as well. This cost can be avoided if the venues are within the hotel premises itself.

Next would be the costs for meals and beverages. There are a variety of global cuisines served that include Indian, Goan, Continental and Oriental that are commonly available. A buffet meal would be in the range of Rs. 750 – Rs. 2,500 for a regular menu offered at most resorts. Customized meal plans are also available for groups. Gala dinners for the reception party are also to be budgeted for that are priced at Rs. 1500 onwards. These include sea-food, live counters and more.

To sum-up costs of accommodation at a comfortable range at a 3 starred deluxe property to a 5 starred resort would be roughly INR 13,000 to INR 20,000 per room on a double occupancy basis with meals included. This price range takes into account starred beach properties and their current rates.

Apart from the accommodation arrangements, a budget needs to be set aside for the venue as well. This can range between INR 75,000 to INR 3 lakh, this too is dependent on whether the venue is the private lawns, the beach, or a banquet hall.


Following booking the hotel and the venues, preparations for the various events, parties, and ceremonies needs to be looked at. On an average to host an event ranges anywhere between INR 3 lakhs to INR 7 lakhs depending on how elaborate the requirements are. This would cover the sound arrangements, décor arrangements, basic entertainment and floral arrangements.  Higher the degree of personalisation the cost will marginally escalate.

The wedding ceremony kick-starts starts  with the ‘Bharaat’ accompanied by Dhol players, and the Ghodi for the groom all decorated with props and floral arrangements priced at Rs. 60,000 onwards. Additionally,  a brass band, horse carriages, elephants, vintage cars can also be arranged for.

The make-up, and hair styling would roughly range from INR 80,000 onwards for the bride and her entourage for the Mehendi, Sangeet, wedding ceremony and reception party. The men can also have a mini-salon arranged for with a hair-stylist.



Cinematographers and photographers that well-known for their work are priced anywhere between Rs 1,50,000 to Rs. 5,00,000 for the event. Local photographers can also be opted for and a comparatively priced lower.  These prices can vary if there are multiple photographers hired and the type of serviced required. Drone photography for example is extremely popular these days at destination events.  Selecting a photographer is all together a different subject however, shortlisting a 3-4 can help you make a better hiring  decision.

Events like these require a special food menu which can range anywhere in between INR 650 to INR 1,500 onwards per person. Live counters and barbeque counters for a gala dinner will have to be budgeted separately.  Resorts offer a number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic packages that include a number of house brands and cocktails that normally range between INR 350 to INR 650 per head.


A conventional timeline for a Hindu wedding begins with the Mehendi Ceremony followed by the Sangeet all of which takes place on day one. On the second day, the Haldi ceremony takes place followed by the wedding ceremony and then the reception party. While estimating a budget for a timeline such as this keep in mind that the bookings calendar for the martial season begins soon after the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi onwards which is during the months of October-November and continues until the months of April-May that concludes the season. The month of December is the most expensive as it is peak tourist season during this time. The second aspect is the location; beach locations are very popular and priced much higher in comparison to venues towards the cities or those that are away from the beach.

The wedding ceremony also require the Mandap, floral arrangements, sound  arrangements, priests, seating arrangements, aisle ways, pandals etc. That would range around INR 3,50,000 onwards.

To begin with, first shortlist the accommodation and venue for which nearly 50% of the allocated budget would have to be set aside. Most hotels include venues in their costing, covering ballrooms and open lawns on their properties which means that you need look for an accommodation preferably has venue space available within the property itself. Cost of accommodation would include meals, local transfers and other amenities available at the hotel.


Now on to the entertainment, there will either have to be a DJ or a live band playing to keep the party alive. About INR 1 lakh to INR 2 lakh would be a decent budget for two days worth entertainment. Apart from DJs and live bands, stand-up comedy, live performing acts, and celebrity performances can also be arranged. Entertainment cost are flexible as a wide range of artists from DJ’s, bands, musicians, classical artists, acrobats and singers can be hired to perform. Depending on the number of performances the cost range between Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 15,00,000.

And now to sum up the entire figure, a destination celebration can range anywhere in between INR 20 lakh to INR 30 lakh for a 3 day and 2 night event for 100 – 120 guests. These are just rough estimates that help you figure out how much a destination event can cost.
